Welcome!

The Los Feliz Improvement Association is a resident run organization dedicated to the quality of life in the Los Feliz district of Los Angeles. We know that good neighborhoods do not happen by accident. We love our neighborhood—Griffith Park, the history, the Deodar cedars along Los Feliz Boulevard, the restaurants, and the diversity. Our volunteer board comprised of twelve committees works diligently around the year on a host of ever evolving issues to preserve an improve Los Feliz.

Thanks to the constant support of our members, the LFIA remains one of the oldest and most influential neighborhood organizations in Los Angeles.

We welcome all residents of Los Feliz to become a member and join one of our committees. Become a member today!

Rodger Young Village, located on the present Zoo parking lot, was a hastily-built city of Quonset huts to provide temporary housing for all the GIs returning from World War II. Little Peter Aguilar lived there from 1947 - 1954.

Calling for old photos of the Los Feliz community over the past decades. Bring them to the annual LFIA Photo Day Saturday, Oct. 30, from 2-5 p.m. at the Los Feliz Library (1874 Hillhurst Ave.) and we'll scan them on the spot. Or you don't even have to leave your house, just e-mail your favorite photos of family & friends to history@LFIA.org. Don't forget to include background info on the photos. Complimentary coffee & cookies provided by Friends of the Los Feliz Library.

Bobcat Study Comes to Griffith Park

September 20, 2010

For the next three to four months, UCLA researchers will be conducting a study of bobcats in Griffith Park. The study will involve live trapping of bobcats at relatively hidden, remote spots of the park. When captured, the cats will be anesthetized, blood samples drawn, and ear tagged for later identification. Then the cats will be released.

A general decline in bobcat population has been associated with mange epizootic within some local urban areas. Animals that have died of mange, an ectoparastic mite disease, were also found to have been exposed to anticoagulant rat poisons. Bobcats are likely exposed to these rat poisons through their small mammal prey. Mange is an unusual disease to affect wild cats, and is generally suggestive of an immune compromised state. The goal of this work is understand how anticoagulant rodenticide exposure may increase susceptibility of individuals to severe mange and other feline diseases.

In addition to studying bobcats within Griffith Park, a broader objective of this study includes sampling across the Santa Monica Mountains in both urban and more pristine areas. This research is a collaboration between the National Park Service (NPS), United States Geological Survey (USGS) and University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Necessary permits are in place with the California Department of Fish and Game and UCLA Animal Research Committee. The Department of Recreation and Parks appreciates the importance of this work and is cooperating to fulfill the scientific goals. If any Griffith Park hikers should see one of these traps, be assured they are for official use. Also, it is important that they not be disturbed. Please pass the word around.
